Ideally located between Sydney’s thriving CBD and up and coming Newcastle, Ettalong is a small but developing seaside community on the beautiful NSW Central Coast. Much of it’s appeal comes from the fact that it still retains many of its small town charms, unlike its bustling neighbours Avoca and Terrigal which can get really packed during the holidays and summer months. But despite it’s more chilled atmosphere, Ettalong has all the amenities that you would expect from a beach holiday destination, such as a top resort in the Mantra Ettalong Beach, plenty of holiday rentals and some lovely cafes and restaurants.
If you check a map, you’ll find that Ettalong itself consists of a community on the east of the Brisbane Water bordering Daley’s Point and Fisherman’s Bay and Ettalong Beach, where the majority of the tourist activity is, which sits between Booker Bay and local hub and shopping centre, Woy Woy. If you’re thinking of booking a getaway in this part of the world, then it is the 'Beach side that you should be considering.
Ettalong Beach has a laidback vibe that makes it very popular with day-trippers and weekend visitors from Sydney, only an hour and a half away. The beach itself is long and golden and, because it lies on the estuary, safer than some of its neighbours, like Umina, which is patrolled by the local Surf Life Saving Club. Having said that, many of the towns of Brisbane Water are well-known to surfers and sightseers for the ocean waves that sweep in to kiss their pristine sands and it’s worth checking out the local surf beaches whilst you are in the area if you want to get some thrills.
Apart from the lovely beach and the big Ettalong resort, the town has the Ettalong Beach Club RSL which is bang on the waterfront and includes all the facilities of a large RSL club such as a restaurant, function rooms and live entertainment, making it a great option for a night out.
There are also an increasing number of decent restaurants and cafes to be found within walking distance of much of the holiday accommodation. Many of the eateries are scattered along the lively Ocean View Road with everything from Italian and Indian through to Modern Australian and Spanish tapas. Then, of course, there are further dining options if you wish to head into Umina and Woy Woy or over the bridge into Killcare and Hardy’s Bay.
The combination of its proximity to both Sydney and Newcastle, great accommodation and eating, and a superb beach all mean that Ettalong is becoming the first choice for many city dwellers looking for a weekend getaway. Beach houses and holiday apartments are booked up early in the peak season, so if you’re thinking of visiting this slice of the Central Coast, it’s best to book early to avoid disappointment.
In the following pages we’ll provide a bit more detail about what you’ll find at Ettalong Beach and the attractions that lie only a short drive from its idyllic sandy beach.
